1968: University Admission, followed by 2 years military service

1969: Joined the SPD (German Social Democratic Party)

April 1970 – October 1974: Studied Economics and Social Sciences at Christian-Albrechts University, Kiel; graduated in Economics December 1974

1974 – 1976: Employed at the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development (Regional Planning and Development)

1976-1981: Various positions in Federal Ministries, as a personal consultant, and in the Chancellery in Bonn

1981: Employed at the permanent representation for the Federal Republic of Germany in East Berlin, in the economic division

1981 – 1985: Personal assistant to the Federal Minister for Research and Technology, and policy advisor to the SPD’s parliamentary group

October 1985 – November 1986: Policy advisor in the planning group of the Ministry for the Environment, Regional Planning and Agriculture, in North Rhine-Westphalia

December 1986 – May 1990: Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau

June 1990 – April 1992: Secretary of State in the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Regional Development, at the Land Schleswig-Holstein

May 1992 – May 1998: Secretary of State, later Minister, of Economics, Technology and Transport of the Land Schleswig-Holstein

October 1998 – February 2000: Minister of Economics, Small Business, Technology and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia
